Day 2: La Roche-Guyon & Giverny (Monet’s Gardens)

Our first full day of cruising included a visit to Château de La Roche-Guyon, a site with significant World War II history that once served as Field Marshal Erwin Rommel’s headquarters.

Later, we docked in Vernon and traveled to Giverny, home to Claude Monet’s house and gardens. Even for travelers who aren’t art enthusiasts, Monet’s gardens—particularly the Japanese-inspired water garden—are a standout highlight of any Normandy river cruise itinerary.

Day 3: Rouen Walking Tour

Rouen is one of the most atmospheric stops along the Seine. A guided walking tour took us through cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and impressive Gothic architecture.

Rouen is also where Joan of Arc was executed, and a memorial now stands at the site. The afternoon was free for independent exploration, which is one of the advantages of river cruising—no rushing, no repacking.

Day 4: Honfleur & Caudebec-en-Caux

This day marked the northernmost point of our cruise. A scenic drive brought us to Honfleur, a charming harbor town known for its colorful buildings and maritime history.

After a guided tour, guests could choose to stay in Honfleur longer or return to the ship. We opted to return for lunch onboard, then explored the small town of Caudebec-en-Caux independently before dinner.

Day 5: Normandy Beaches Tour (Utah & Omaha Beach)

The Normandy Beaches excursion was one of the most powerful experiences of the entire cruise.

We began with a three-hour drive to Utah Beach, followed by a visit to Sainte-Mère-Église, the first town liberated by American forces. Here, we toured the Airborne Museum and learned about paratrooper John Steele, who famously became trapped on the church steeple during the D-Day invasion.

We then visited the American Cemetery, where thousands of white crosses honor those who gave their lives. Our final stop was Omaha Beach, where Uniworld arranged a moving ceremony that included The Star-Spangled Banner, Taps, and a letter of gratitude from the French people. Each guest placed a rose at the memorial—an unforgettable and emotional moment.

Day 6: Versailles from Mantes-la-Jolie

After a peaceful morning cruising the Seine, we departed for the Palace of Versailles.

A special highlight was touring the private apartments, which are not typically included in standard tours. We then continued through the main palace. The scale, opulence, and history of Versailles are extraordinary, and a full day is ideal to truly appreciate both the palace and its gardens.

Days 7–8: Return to Paris

Our cruise concluded back in Paris, where we had time to revisit favorite sights, complete our shopping, and enjoy a final taste of the city before departure.

Staterooms & Ship

This was my first time sailing with Uniworld River Cruises, and the onboard experience on the S.S. Joie de Vivre exceeded expectations. The ship was elegant and beautifully designed. The beds were exceptionally comfortable—among the best I’ve experienced on a river cruise. Our mid-deck stateroom featured double sinks, marble finishes, and a spacious shower.

Dining & Service

Dining onboard was consistently good, though not particularly memorable. That said, the service at every meal was outstanding. The staff were friendly and attentive throughout the cruise, though the cruise director came across as slightly formal for my personal taste.
