Main River

Why Sail the Main?

The Main River flows through picturesque landscapes, including rolling hills, vineyards, and charming villages. As you cruise along the Main, you'll be treated to stunning views of the Franconian wine region, the Spessart Forest, and the scenic Tauber Valley. Cities such as Würzburg, Bamberg, and Frankfurt offer a blend of architectural gems, medieval charm, and vibrant city life. Each stop along the Main River provides an opportunity to explore fascinating historical sites and landmarks. Its riverbanks offer opportunities for cycling, boating, and leisurely walks, attracting tourists and locals.

The Main River is a significant river in Germany. It stretches approximately 524 kilometers (326 miles) from its source to its confluence with the Rhine River near Mainz. The Main River is joined by several tributaries along its course, including the Tauber, Regnitz, and Nidda rivers. The Main River originates in the Upper Franconian hills in the region of Bavaria, near the town of Creußen. Its source is at an elevation of about 680 meters (2,230 feet) above sea level.

River cruises on the Main River will typically be on longer itineraries that sail between Amsterdam and Budapest, though portions of the Main might be sailed on shorter cruises that sail from Vienna or Budapest.

When Should You Sail the Main?

Sailing on the Danube can be enjoyable during any season of the year. Pricing will tend to be lowest during low and shoulder seasons, though weather can be a little cooler during these time periods. But peak season brings tourist crowds and potentially hot summer days. Our preference is to sail April into early May or late September into October. If you are looking to sail during Christmas Market season, be sure to choose a sailing after markets open - typically late November into early December.

Water level issues can crop up at at any time - read up on what causes issues and when they are most likely to occur on our Water Levels page.
