The Elbe River is one of the major rivers in Central Europe. It flows through the Czech Republic and Germany before it drains into the North Sea, covering a total length of approximately 1,094 kilometers (680 miles). The Elbe River originates near the Czech-Polish border in the Krkonoše Mountains, specifically from the confluence of the White Elbe and the Black Elbe. and enters Germany near the town of Hřensko. Its source is at an elevation of about 1,386 meters (4,547 feet) above sea level.

The Elbe River has historically played a vital role in transportation and trade, serving as a major waterway in Central Europe. It allows for inland navigation, connecting cities and regions along its course and providing a route for the transportation of goods. The Elbe River is home to the Elbe Biosphere Reserve, a protected area recognized by UNESCO. The reserve spans across Germany and the Czech Republic, encompassing diverse ecosystems, wetlands, and habitats that support a rich array of flora and fauna.

Most Elbe River cruise itineraries travel between Prague and Berlin - though neither of these cities are found on the Elbe river itstelf.

Sailing on the Elbe is typically available between March and December, with a very short timeframe for low/shoulder season. The shallow waters of the Elbe River make this river easily impacted by periods of heavy rain or severe drought.
